Duplex ultrasound and compression applications for venous health

Explore the first ever MOH Connect!

Embark on a journey into the world of venous health and diagnostics with Dr Erika Mendoza and Dr Tobias Hirsch from Germany! 🩺

Get ready to dive deep into the realm of duplex ultrasound, where you'll uncover its diagnostic power in the context of venous health. Discover the efficacy of compression applications for treating venous disorders, and explore how these innovative techniques are revolutionizing patient care.

In this first of its kind MOH Connect, Dr Erika Mendoza gives insights into the art of duplex ultrasound investigation during a live patient examination in her vein clinic, followed by Dr Tobias Hirsch’s presentation about state-of-the-art compression application including hot-off-the-press evidence.

The MOH Connect was moderated by Dr. Mohamed Omar Elfarok, a Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Cairo, Egypt.

Dr. Erika Mendoza, specializing in venous investigation and CHIVA treatment, streamed live from her clinic how she investigates a patient with varicose veins using duplex ultrasound. Operating a vein clinic in Germany since 1997, Dr. Mendoza's expertise extends to vital roles in international phlebology societies. She performed different maneuvers (Valsalva, toe elevation, calf compression and dependency maneuver) and explained the key points for each maneuver. Furthermore, Dr Mendoza shared important observations with implications for therapy.

Dr. Tobias Hirsch, a specialist in Internal Medicine and Angiology, provided practical insights into compression therapy. In his presentation, Dr Hirsch provided an overview of different types of compression therapy (Compression bandages, medical compression stockings and adaptive compression devices (wraps)) and pointed out their characteristics and usages. He highlighted evidence-backed guidelines from international societies. Covering diverse cases, including post-surgery lymphedema, lipedema, venous leg ulcer and DVT, Dr. Hirsch stressed the importance of tailored compression strategies. Additionally, Dr Hirsch presented the preliminary results of the AKROE study on using Coolflex Standard Calf and Foot in edema patients.

Take home messages

  • Effective venous examination relies on proper techniques such as Valsalva and dependency maneuver, as demonstrated by Dr. Mendoza's live investigations.

  • Tailored compression strategies are crucial in managing conditions like post-surgery lymphedema and cancer-related edema, as emphasized by Dr. Hirsch.

  • Evidence-based guidelines from international conferences, presented by both speakers, play a vital role in informing effective compression therapy practices.
