Duplex ultrasound of sapheno-femoral junction

  • Lecture on Provocation Maneuvres and Exploration of the terminal and pre terminal valve with discussion
  • Live hands on with the patient : common life  exploration of patients, with axial reflux and para-ostial reflux (competent terminal valve). Tricks to elicit blood flow in patients with „difficult“ refluxes.
  • Q/A session and wrap up

Take home messages

  • Before initiating treatment for venous disease, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive duplex ultrasound examination.
  • This examination should be performed with the patient in a standing position, beginning at the groin.
  • Various provocation maneuvers, such as the Valsalva maneuver, manual calf compression, and toe elevation, are employed to assess venous flow.
  • Groin reflux is classified as axial when both the terminal and preterminal valves are incompetent.
  • Paraostial reflux is identified by a competent terminal valve and an incompetent preterminal valve.
  • Accurate documentation of preoperative findings is crucial for identifying the causes of recurrences.
